The Casino Gamble
The argument over gambling and its legalization is one being fought all over the world. Casinos can be lucrative for a city, but many feel that despite the immediate financial gains, the city will end up morally bankrupt in the end.
Many studies suggest that casinos can fuel many social afflictions. While the monetary gains may be sufficient for the city, the losses can be crippling to its citizens. The urge to gamble can easily become a full blown addiction. This addiction can grow until it affects a person so greatly that those around them begin to suffer.
Once a person has a gambling problem it's very hard to regain control. Soon their work is affected and they can no longer pay their bills. Gambling addicts frequently end up losing their homes and their families. Many turn to crime in order to pay off gambling debts and others commit suicide.
Many communities that have welcomed casino gaming became areas of crime, prostitution, alcoholism, and drug abuse. The pattern seems to suggest that one vice can lead to another. This is why casinos are so hotly contested in some areas. The money and jobs that one can provide are a narrow view of the overall result.
Surrounding the golden palace of fast money and good times are those that have fallen to poverty and crime. Tourists from other towns flood the streets and outside businesses leach onto the flow of money. Local business often suffers in this climate. What's more, the financial gains of the city are overrated. Taxes actually have been shown to go up in these cities as the cost of criminal justice, mental health, and welfare all increase mightily.
This gamble on casinos that cities make seems to resemble the gambling that any problem gambler in any casino would partake in. They are both desperate for cash and hoping that the remaining cash they do have will be enough to make one big wager. This gamble will decide the fate of the gambler and all those that they care about. The problem here is that there's no real way to win this bet. A financial windfall only furthers the belief in this false system of earning. Eventually the house wins out and the gambler is left repeatedly trying to recapture the last success. The community side of this comparison differs only slightly. Their financial windfall comes with a whole set of consequences that don't readily show up on the financial figures. When a city rots from the inside out no one will notice until it's too late.
